How To Create An Attention-Grabbing Instagram Bio
Updated: Dec 20, 2019
A strong online presence is founded on getting the basics right. Your bio or profile on your social media accounts is one of these basics or foundational elements.
Here are three reasons you need a strong bio or profile:
People have short attention spans.
According to Harvard Business School researcher Nancy F. Koehn, goldfish - yes goldfish - have longer attention spans than humans. Nine seconds to our eight.
So you have eight seconds to capture someone’s attention. Maybe less.
When people come across your account they want to know 2 things:
What do you do?
Why should they care?
Your Instagram bio has to answer those questions in 150 characters or less.
A great bio helps with search.
Profiles with a specific keyword in the name, rank best in search on Google and on Instagram. For example: If you are a wellness coach, it’s a good idea to include this in your name like this>> @DebraWellnessCoach.
First Steps to creating an attention-grabbing bio on Instagram
1. Use a clear image of yourself or your business logo
If you are your business, in other words, you’re a solopreneur like a coach, consultant or artist, then you will want to add an image of yourself and not your logo. The reason for this is people connect with people.
It’s a good idea to keep your image consistent across all platforms.
2. Take advantage of the description area (bio)
Your bio area is prime real estate. Here you can do any of the following:
Tell people what you do
Highlight a freebie
Highlight a product or service
Show off your achievements/awards
Highlight causes close to your heart (charities, non-profits)
Now, let’s look at the various ways you can bling up your Instagram bio with emojis.
Choose your emojis carefully
Before you start adding emojis to your bio, make sure you have a solid grasp of what each emoji means and that you will be using it in the right context because most emojis have multiple meanings.
Exhibit A: 🍑
A deliciously sweet peach. Perfect if you’re a baker specializing in peach cobblers but potentially disastrous for almost everyone else.
Emoji fanatics Emojipedia have conducted some research into how we actually use peach emoji. On the 11th of December, they analysed a random selection of 571 English-language tweets using peach emoji and found that 33% of them involved the supposedly fruit-like icon being used as a shorthand for "bum" or "butt." A further 27% of tweets had sexual connotations, such as "who loves big #booties" followed by peach emoji. Another 13% saw peach emoji being used to represent the human glutes in a fitness context: "front squat warm ups" followed by peach emoji, for example. In total, 73% of tweets involved peach emoji being used to represent a person's backside in some form. - from Refinery29’s article “This is what we really mean when we use the peach emoji” (2016)
